Undergraduate Research Fair

Discover – Undergraduate Research at Mizzou
Student looking through the Research Fair program.
Friday, August 18, 2023
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
McQuinn Atrium, Bond Life Sciences Center
Dr. Paula McSteen discusses her research studying the genetics of maize plants with students at the Research Fair.
Center for Tree Ring Science discuss their research at the Research Fair.

Find out about the research happening at Mizzou and how YOU can get involved. Researchers from around campus will bring hands-on demonstrations of their research & creative scholarship. Incoming & current students can visit with researchers in the fields of anthropology, human development, environmental science, linguistics, geography, social work and more! The Office of Global & National FellowshipsMedOppWriting Center, & MU Libraries will be on hand & talk about how they can help students pursue their research goals.

Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m!

Explore the scholarship displayed, and talk with the researchers about their work.
Also on hand are different offices and resources to help you on your academic journey.

This year we have 13 research labs opening up their spaces to provide tours* to interested students. Space is limited per tour, sign up at the Tour Table!

*Tours happen at 11:30am and 12pm.

Student receiving information during a tour of a Plant Science & Technology lab.
11:30 a.m. Tours
  • Physics & Astronomy
    • Dr. Gavin King –  Dr. King is developing and implementing a unique ultrastable atomic force microscope (AFM) to elucidate the structure, structural energetics, and conformational fluctuations of membrane proteins.
    • Dr. Yicheng Guo –  Dr. Guo’s research focuses on how galaxies, such as our own Milky Way, were formed and evolved from small, irregular blobs in the early universe into today’s massive systems with diverse morphology.
  • Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology
    • Dr. Jacqueline Limberg –  Dr. Limberg is researching the mechanisms that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and interventions that can reverse and/or prevent cardiovascular disease risk.
  • Department of Biochemistry
    • Dr. Craig Schenck –   Dr. Schenck is researching the evolution of plant chemical diversity, and harnessing innovations to increase crop resilience using gene editing approaches and enhanced production of medicinal plant compounds.
    • Dr. Clarissa Durie – The goal of Dr. Durie’s research program is to integrate biochemical, biophysical, and genetic approaches to understand the structure, regulation, and function of bacterial secretion systems in their physiological contexts.
  • Department of Chemistry
    • Dr. Heather Hennkens – Dr. Hennkens is researching the production and purification of medical radionuclides and their use in the development of theranostic (combination of therapeutic and diagnostic) metals-based radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Division of Plant Science & Technology
    • Dr. David Mendoza-Cozatl –  Dr. Mendoza-Cózatl is working to understand how trace metals, which can be toxins or essential micronutrients, are taken up, accumulated and transported between roots and leaves and seeds.
  • Division of Biological Sciences
    • Dr. Pamela Brown –  Dr. Brown investigates the structure of bacterial cell walls, and studies how and why the molecular machinery that builds the wall is targeted to specific cell locations at certain times.
    • Dr. Enoch Ng’oma – Dr. Ng’oma uses genetic techniques to help understand the role of environmental conditions and natural selection on rates of aging in different species of animals.
    • Dr. Dan Bergstrahl and Dr. Tara Finegan – Then Finegan Bergstralh Lab is currently studying how epithelial cells figure out the right direction in which to divide, and what happens when they don’t.
  • School of Natural Resources
    • Dr. Jacob Westhoff – Dr. Westhoff is studying the life history distribution, habitat use, environmental tolerances, and general ecology of aquatic organisms while focusing on the applied needs of state and federal cooperators.
  • Department of Veterinary Pathobiology
    • Dr. Roman Ganta – Dr. Ganta works to understand how tick-borne pathogens developed the ability to survive in animals and to discover critical proteins to develop molecular strategies to make pathogens incapable of causing diseases.
