You can support your research activities during your undergraduate and future graduate studies with fellowships. The Office of Global and National Fellowships works with students to identify relevant fellowships opportunities and supports students during the application process. Contact them to setup an advising appointment about opportunities suited to you. A selection of fellowships that support research is listed below:
- National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): REUs are paid, mentored summer research experiences hosted by a U.S. university. Opportunities are available in all fields supported by NSF.
- DAAD RISE: Offers summer research internships at a German university for undergraduates in natural science, engineering and life sciences
- Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink: Gives a summer research experience at a Canadian university to U.S. students in any field
- Goldwater Scholarship: Provides a financial award to sophomores and juniors majoring in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering who excel in research.
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholarship: Offers a two-year scholarship, a paid summer research internship at NOAA, and travel to a scientific conference.
- American Society of Plant Biologists Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF): Freshmen, sophomores and juniors can receive a $4,000 stipend to support summer research in plant biology.
- National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF): Provides a tuition waver and $34,000 stipend for three years to graduate students in research-based graduate programs in NSF fields.
- Science Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarships: Offers full-tuition scholarships for STEM students at any degree level, as well as summer internships at a sponsoring Department of Defense (DOD). After graduation, scholars work in a civilian position at the DOD site.
- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG): Provides three years of funding to students pursuing degrees in engineering, oceanography, mathematics, biosciences, chemistry, neural and behavioral sciences, geosciences and physics.
- GEM: Supports underrepresented students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in applied science and engineering. The program pays tuition, provides a stipend and links students with internship opportunities that often lead to employment.
- Graduate Fellowship or STEM Diversity (GFSD): Offers STEM graduate students a $20,000 scholarship, renewable up to six years, and a sponsored summer internship.
- Fulbright U.S. Student Program: US citizens who are graduating seniors or graduate students are eligible to apply to study, conduct research, or teach English in one of 140+ countries.
- Churchill Scholarship: Funds one year of graduate study in engineering, mathematics and/or the sciences at the University of Cambridge.
- Marshall Scholarship: Provides at least one year of funding for graduate study in the United Kingdom
- Rhodes Scholarship: Provides at least two years of funding for graduate study at the University of Oxford.
- Gates Cambridge Scholarship: Funds graduate study at the University of Cambridge, with a preference for students pursuing a doctorate.
