We are seeking an advanced undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science to assist ongoing research pioneered by Dr. Chau Tong and her research lab in the School of Journalism. The research lab is at the forefront of cutting-edge research in Social Media Analytics & Communication Technology, and this is a unique opportunity for a talented and motivated student to make a meaningful contribution to high-impact research projects.

Position Overview:

As an Advanced Undergraduate Research Assistant, you will play a crucial role in our research activities. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting web scraping using Python and Selenium, creating a website for our research lab, and performing basic statistical analysis using R or Python.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Web Scraping with Python and Selenium: You will be responsible for developing web scraping scripts using Python and Selenium to collect data from specified websites. This will involve designing and implementing automated web scraping solutions, handling data extraction, and ensuring data quality.
  2. Website Development: Create and maintain a website for our research lab. This includes designing a user-friendly and informative website, updating content regularly, and ensuring its functionality and accessibility.
  3. Basic Statistical Analysis: Assist in performing basic statistical analysis using R or Python on the collected data. This may involve data cleaning, visualization, and the application of statistical tests as needed.
  4. Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with other members of the research lab, including faculty, graduate students, and fellow undergraduates. Participate in research meetings and discussions.
  5. Documentation: Maintain detailed records of web scraping scripts, website development progress, and statistical analysis procedures for future reference.

Required Skills

Qualifications:

  • Advanced undergraduate majoring in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, including experience with web scraping using Selenium.
  • Familiarity with web development technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for website creation.
  • Basic knowledge of statistical analysis using R or Python.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in data-driven research related to current social issues, particular in the domains of health and politics.
  • Previous relevant research or coding experience.
