Lab Assistant (SCN screening) – Soybean Breeding

Duties

A lab assistant position is available in the soybean breeding program to assist with the soybean cyst nematode resistance screening bioassay. This is a technical position in a research program. The successful candidate will assist with the set-up, take-down, and data collection of germplasm screens for nematode resistance, watering of plants in the greenhouse, disposal of soil, dishwashing, and lab cleanliness.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate is majoring/has majored in plant science, biology, or a related field who is self-motivated, organized, detail oriented, enthusiastic and eager to learn, manages time well, and is reliable. Excellent verbal communication skills are required. Prior experience working with plants is desirable. Must have the ability to lift at least 30 pounds, stand for prolonged periods of time while doing technical tasks, and be able to work in hot greenhouse/field conditions. A driver’s license is required to operate university vehicles.

This position will mainly report to SCN Diagnostics on the MU campus, but may need to report to the Bay Farm Research Facility at 5601 South Rangeline Road Columbia MO 65201 (south and adjacent to Bradford Research Center, approximately 9 miles southeast of MU campus) as needed. Personal transportation is required. Applicants must have at least 4hr blocks of availability M-F and availability for 1hr on a rotational basis during weekends to water.
