Paul Bolls
Paul Bolls loves his job. He’s an assistant professor of strategic communication in the School of Journalism. Bolls says mentors from his undergraduate days laid the foundation for him to pursue this career that he loves so much.
Bolls started working with undergraduate researchers when he joined the Mizzou faculty in fall 2004.
“Mentoring undergraduates is so fulfilling because of their unbridled curiosity. My students’ curiosity helps me examine my own research in a different light. Engaging undergraduates in research has given me the honor of having a front row seat from which to observe students develop their critical thinking skills and grow to the point of being able to confidently talk about complex research in front of international academic audiences. Seeing that growth is just simply amazing,” Bolls says.
Bolls received his PhD from Indiana University, a master's degree from Washington State University, and bachelor's degree from Montana State University.
What students say about Bolls:
“'Doc' immediately treated me as a professional and warmly introduced me to the procedures of the lab. More importantly, he opened my eyes to the field of communication research which is now my intended career choice.
A huge part of my learning experience has been the fact that 'Doc' always challenges me to first try something on my own instead of relying on his expertise. I truly admire his teaching style.” — Rebecca Norris
“Dr. Bolls is not only a rare professor in the quality and depth of his lectures, but outside the classroom his curiosity is contagious as well. During orientation meetings in the PRIME Lab, new student associates have spoken of Dr. Bolls’ ability to get them interested and keep them interested in the research he conducts. Personally, I believe he gives little thought to recruitment of these individuals — it just happens naturally, which is far more impressive.”
— Rachel Bailey
“Instead of dictating my actions, Dr. Bolls taught me the research process so I could manage the project. His belief in me was truly inspiring.
He cares deeply for his students and tends to put their needs in front of his own. Most telling of Dr. Bolls’ openness to students is the fact that his door is never shut when he is in his office.”
